Hey folks! This is Patrick from Chip Happens Auto Glass.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"What technology can be buried in a modern windshield, and how does it affect replacement?"

Summary:

Patrick describes the wide range of technology that can be embedded in a modern windshield. He traces it from 1990s rain-sensing systems and heads-up displays, still in use today, to features introduced around 2012 and later such as lane departure, brake assist, forward collision alert, and TV tuners, plus condensation and humidity sensors. Most of this hardware concentrates around the rearview mirror, hidden behind a plastic cover. He explains that after installing the glass, technicians must calibrate the software so the systems correctly interpret their new position and the optics of the new windshield. While the service is relatively quick, it accomplishes a great deal. He adds that some vehicles, like Lamborghini and Range Rover, have defrost grids built into the windshield that must also be connected and tested.

Answer:

The technology that can be infused in a modern windshield varies wildly. Back in the nineties, rain-sensing technology and heads-up display came out, and those are still used today. But as of around the late 2012 era, we started seeing lane departure, brake assist, forward collision alert, TV tuners -- you name it. There are condensation sensors, humidity sensors, and many, many more. The list is very long. Most of these tie into the rearview mirror area of the vehicle, and there's typically a plastic cover hiding all of that hardware. After the glass is installed, we have to calibrate the software so the systems understand their new space and the new optics of the glass. So there's a lot that goes into it, even though the service itself is pretty quick -- we're accomplishing a lot with those calibrations. On some vehicles, like a Lamborghini or Range Rover, they even use a defrost grid built right into the windshield, so those get plugged in and tested as well to make sure everything is operating correctly.
