Hey folks! This is Patrick from Chip Happens Auto Glass.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"How does a windshield wear out from pitting and sandblasting without cracking?"

Summary:

Patrick explains that a windshield can degrade to the point of needing replacement even without a chip or crack. Years of exposure to fine debris like sand and small rocks cause pitting that doesn't break the glass but gradually sandblasts it, making it hard to see through when sunlight or glare hits. He notes this can justify a replacement, and insurance may cover it if the driver reports not feeling safe due to impaired visibility. He also points to scratching as a cause of wear, often from people using shovels or other improvised tools to scrape winter ice. He advises using plastic ice tools designed for the purpose, and reiterates that applying cold water helps avoid dragging hard objects across the glass, since glass is not harder than the tools people often use on it.

Answer:

A windshield can actually wear out and need replacement without ever being chipped or cracked. Over time you can catch pit damage from smaller debris -- sand and tiny rocks -- that isn't big enough to create a chip but slowly pits the windshield to the point that it's basically sandblasted and hard to see through, especially when the sun or glare hits it. That can be a valid reason to have the glass changed, and your insurance can cover it if you explain that you don't feel safe because you can't see clearly out of your windshield. The other way glass gets worn is through scratching. People have grabbed shovels or whatever else they can find to scrape ice off their windshield in the winter. You really want to stick to plastic tools designed for that job instead. And again, putting cold water on a frozen windshield can help minimize scratches, because you're not dragging hard objects across the glass. Glass is hard, but it's not harder than most of the objects people typically use to clean it off.
