Can My Rock Chip Be Repaired?

Most of them can. Star breaks, bullseyes, half-moons and combination chips up to about the size of a quarter, plus cracks up to a few inches, can be repaired as long as the damage is not in the driver's direct line of sight or at the edge of the windshield. The repair takes about 30 minutes, you can drive right away, and the factory seal on your windshield stays untouched.

Chip Happens started as a rock chip company, and it is still the service we are proudest of. We repair chips at homes, workplaces and park-and-rides across Monroe, Everett, Snohomish, Sultan, Gold Bar, Bothell and the rest of Snohomish and North King County, and we take walk-ins at the Monroe shop on weekdays.

Why Should a Chip Be Fixed This Week, Not Next Month?

Because chips spread for predictable reasons: a cold morning, a hot defroster, a pothole on US-2, a slammed door. Every one of those flexes the glass and pushes the break a little further. Moisture and dirt also work into an open chip and make it harder to fill cleanly, so the repair looks better and holds stronger the sooner it is done.

Until we get to you, put a piece of clear tape over the chip, go easy on the defroster and skip the car wash. Then call. A chip repair this week is a windshield replacement avoided next month.

How Does a Resin Chip Repair Actually Work?

The technician cleans the break, mounts a bridge over it, draws a vacuum to pull air and moisture out, then injects a clear optical resin under pressure so it flows into every leg of the break. The resin is cured with UV light, the surface is scraped flush and polished, and the chip goes from an obvious star to a faint mark most people never notice.

A good repair restores most of the windshield's strength at the break and, most importantly, stops the crack from running. It is not invisible, and anyone who promises that is overselling. What it is, is permanent.

Rock Chip Repair Questions, Answered

Straight answers from the shop. For more, read the Auto Glass Q&A.

How big a chip can be repaired?

Up to about the size of a quarter, and cracks up to a few inches, as long as the damage is not in the driver's direct line of sight or within an inch or two of the edge of the windshield.

Will the chip disappear completely?

A good repair makes the chip much less noticeable and stops it from spreading, but a faint mark can remain. The goal is strength and stopping the crack, not invisibility.

Is rock chip repair covered by insurance?

Often yes, and sometimes with no deductible, because a repair saves the insurer the cost of a replacement. Call us with your policy details and we will help you check.

Can you repair a chip in the rain?

The break has to be dry inside for the resin to bond, so in wet weather we prefer the Monroe shop or a covered spot. We can usually dry a chip out on site when the weather cooperates.

What should I do right after a rock hits my windshield?

Put clear tape over the chip to keep dirt and moisture out, avoid the defroster on high and the car wash, and call us. The sooner it is filled, the better the repair.
