Hey folks! This is Patrick from Chip Happens Auto Glass.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"How to prevent cracks on windshield from spreading too fast?"

Answer

So to prevent windshield cracks from spreading too fast, just take it easy on the road. Avoid potholes, speed bumps, things like that as the windshield is connected to the frame of the vehicle so it does flex with all that movement. And then um you know heat up and cool down your vehicle slowly so that way it's not rapid on the brake as that will get those oxygen molecules that are trapped in the glass uh zooming and causing spread

Summary

Regarding avoiding rock chips while driving, Patrick Sherman stated that there is "really nothing you can do" as it is a no-fault loss. To prevent existing windshield cracks from spreading too fast, Patrick Sherman advised driving gently, avoiding potholes and speed bumps to minimize flexing of the vehicle's frame, to which the windshield is connected. They also recommended heating and cooling the vehicle slowly to prevent rapid temperature changes on the break, which can cause the oxygen molecules trapped in the glass to spread the crack (00:02:49).
